Deosai plateau and Sheosar Lake
Overview
A five-day jeep safari across the Deosai Plains — a high plateau averaging around 4,100 m between Skardu and Astore — taking in Sheosar Lake and the Himalayan brown bear habitat the national park was created to protect. Almost all of it is driven, which makes it the high-altitude trip for people who do not want to trek.
What Deosai actually is
The second-highest plateau in the world, under snow for eight months of the year and in flower for about two. It is not mountain scenery in the Karakoram sense — there are no walls above you. It is open rolling grassland at the altitude of Mont Blanc’s summit, with marmots, wildflowers and a horizon in every direction.
Sheosar Lake sits at roughly 4,142 m near the Astore side, and on a still morning it holds the reflection of the Nanga Parbat massif. That is the photograph people come for.
Will you see a bear?
Possibly, and we will not promise it. Deosai National Park holds one of the last viable Himalayan brown bear populations and the count is in the low dozens across a very large plateau. Our guides know the drainages the bears use and the hours they move, and we plan the days around that rather than driving the main track and hoping. Marmots are guaranteed; bears are a good morning.
How hard is it, if you are not walking?
The altitude is the thing. You sleep at around 3,500 m in Skardu and spend days above 4,000 m, which is enough to make unacclimatised people genuinely unwell. We build the ascent through Skardu rather than driving up on day one, and we carry oxygen. There are short optional walks at the lake and in the drainages, none of them obligatory.
When it runs
July to September. The plateau tracks are snowbound outside that window — this is not a shoulder-season trip, and operators selling Deosai in May are selling a locked gate.
What is inside the price
Park fees and permits, 4x4s and drivers on our own plates, hotels in Skardu and Astore, camp nights on the plateau with cook and mess, a guide on our payroll who knows the bear ground, oxygen, satellite comms where the signal stops, and a written evacuation plan that names the drive-out from the middle of the plateau — which is the number that matters on this trip.

Private departures and group pricing
Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.

Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.
Getting there
Islamabad
Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, local SIM and cash sorted.
Islamabad to Skardu
A short flight that is weather-dependent, or a long road that is not. We build a buffer day either way and quote both.
On the ground
Our own 4x4s and our own drivers from Skardu onward.
Questions people actually ask
Will we see a bear?
Maybe. Deosai is one of the last strongholds of the Himalayan brown bear and sightings happen, but anybody promising you one is selling something. Marmots and birdlife are near certain.
How rough is the driving?
Rough enough that we carry our own spares and drive our own vehicles. Long hours on unsealed track at altitude. If you get carsick, say so and we will put you in front.
Is the altitude a problem?
It can be. The plateau is above 4,000 m and you reach it from Skardu in a day, which is a fast gain. Most people get a headache on the first night. Tell the guide if it is worse than that.
Can I do this if I do not trek?
Yes. This is the trip we recommend to people who want the high country without walking into it. The walks are short and optional.
When is it open?
The plateau is under snow for much of the year and the tracks only clear in summer.
Where do we sleep?
A full camp on the plateau — sleeping tents, mess tent, kitchen, toilet tent, and a cook. There are no hotels up there and we would not use them if there were.
