Kachura lakes and Satpara

Easy1 day2,600 m [confirm]March – NovemberSkardu · Day excursion

Overview

A full day from Skardu around the three lakes closest to the town: Lower Kachura, Upper Kachura and Satpara. One vehicle, short walks, and back for dinner.

Lower Kachura

Lower Kachura is the one with the resort on it, usually called Shangrila, and it is the most photographed thing in Baltistan. It is also busy, landscaped and not remotely wild, and we would rather tell you that now. Go early and it is genuinely pretty.

Upper Kachura

A short drive on and far quieter — deeper, clearer and with almost nothing built around it. Most day trips stop at the lower lake and turn round, which is why the upper one is worth the extra twenty minutes.

Satpara

Above the town on the road toward Deosai, with the Manthal Buddha rock on the way up. Satpara is a reservoir now rather than the lake it was, which has changed it, and we will say so rather than selling a photograph from fifteen years ago.

Who it is for

Anyone with a buffer day in Skardu waiting for a flight, which is most people who come here — including everyone heading for the Baltoro. No walking required, nothing high, and the whole day is within an hour of the town.

When it runs

March to November.

What is inside the price

Transport and your own driver, a guide on our payroll, entry fees, a packed lunch and water. Group first aid, and the evacuation procedure we publish for every trip. See the rest of Skardu and our other day excursions.

Day by day

Buffer days are built in, not padding. If the weather takes them, nothing downstream collapses and you are not charged twice.

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly

No fitness requirement at all. Every lake is reached by vehicle and the walking is short, flat and optional.

This is the most accessible trip in the catalogue and we will run it for anyone who can get in and out of a car. If mobility is a concern, say so and we will plan the stops so that the views are reachable without the walks.

Kit list

The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.

Group — we provide

  • Vehicle, driver and fuel
  • Group first aid
  • Water

Personal — yours

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Layers — valley warmth and viewpoint cold on the same morning
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Personal medication

Safety, evacuation and insurance

Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.

Carried on every departure

A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.

The rule that cannot be overruled

The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Questions people actually ask

Is Shangrila worth seeing?

Go early and it is genuinely pretty. It is also busy, landscaped and not remotely wild, and it is the most photographed thing in Baltistan. We would rather tell you that now than have you arrive expecting wilderness.

Which lake is the best one?

Upper Kachura — deeper, clearer and with almost nothing built around it. Most day trips stop at the lower lake and turn round, which is why the upper one is worth the extra twenty minutes.

How long is the day, and when does it run?

A full day from Skardu, back for dinner. March to November, and every stop is within an hour of the town.

How fit do I need to be?

Not at all. Every lake is reached by vehicle and the walking is short, flat and optional. This is the most accessible trip we run.

How high does it get?

Around 2,600 m at Satpara. We have no reliable second source for that, so it carries a marker. There is no altitude concern here.

Do I need a permit?

No. Your Pakistan visa is the only paperwork. Entry fees at the lakes are in the price.

What does it cost and what moves the price?

Party size, almost entirely — one vehicle, one driver and one guide however many seats are filled. It is the cheapest trip in the catalogue. Deposit is 25 per cent.

Has Satpara changed?

Yes. It is a reservoir now rather than the lake it was, which has changed its character. We say so rather than selling you a photograph from fifteen years ago.
