Baltistan forts and mosques
Overview
A seven-day cultural journey through Baltistan — Skardu, Shigar, Khaplu and the Saling and Thalay valleys — built around the restored forts and the old wooden mosques. Road-based, graded easy, and the slowest-paced trip we sell, deliberately.
Little Tibet
Baltistan’s language is Balti, a Tibetan language, and its building tradition, irrigation and village layout come from the same source rather than from the plains of Pakistan. That is the thread of this trip. You are not looking at Mughal architecture with mountains behind it; you are looking at a Tibetan culture that became Muslim and kept almost everything else.
The Chaqchan Mosque in Khaplu, from around 1370, is the oldest building on the itinerary — carved wood, no mortar in the structural joinery, still in daily use. The Amburiq Mosque in Shigar is of a similar tradition and was restored with the fort.
The two great restorations
Shigar Fort — the Fong Khar, “palace on the rock” — was a ruin and is now a working hotel, restored over seven years by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture using local craftsmen and original techniques. Khaplu Palace in Ghanche followed. Both won international conservation awards, and both are places you can sleep rather than queue through. We book you into them where availability allows and say so plainly when it does not.
The valleys
Saling and Thalay are the part of this trip most people remember. They are ordinary Balti farming valleys — apricot terraces, water channels, poplar lines — with no attraction in them at all, and a morning spent walking between villages with a guide who grew up there is worth more than another fort.
Who it suits
People who would rather understand one valley than photograph six. There is no trekking and no altitude above about 2,500 m, so it is open to any fitness and works well for families and for older travellers. It also pairs naturally with the cold deserts safari, which covers the same ground from a different angle.
When it runs
April to October. Spring brings the apricot blossom through the Shigar and Khaplu terraces in April, which is the best week of the year to be there.
What is inside the price
All permits, transport on our own vehicles with our own drivers, hotels including the heritage properties where available, all meals, every entry fee, and a Balti guide on our payroll — on this trip the guide is most of what you are buying, and ours are from these valleys. Medical kit, satellite comms and a written evacuation plan as on every trip we run.

Private departures and group pricing
Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.
| Party size | Price per person | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | USD 2,550 | A full crew for two people |
| 3 – 4 | USD 2,050 | |
| 5 – 8 | USD 1,650 | Second guide joins at six |
Deposit is 25% of the trip price. The payment schedule and the cancellation terms are published and sent with every quote, before you pay anything.

Personal — yours

Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.
Getting there
Islamabad
Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, local SIM and cash sorted.
Islamabad to Skardu
A short flight that is weather-dependent, or a long road that is not. We build a buffer day either way and quote both.
On the ground
Our own 4x4s and our own drivers from Skardu onward.
Questions people actually ask
Are the forts actually hotels?
Shigar Fort and Khaplu Palace are both restored and both operate as hotels. Staying in them is the point of the trip rather than a bonus, and it is why this itinerary costs more than a comparable number of nights elsewhere.
Is it suitable for older travellers?
Mostly yes, with one caveat: historic buildings have uneven floors, low doorways and stairs without handrails. Tell us about mobility at enquiry and we will tell you honestly which parts will be difficult.
Can this run in winter?
Skardu is cold but reachable and both properties stay open through the winter. It is quieter and the light is better. The flight is less reliable.
Who explains the buildings?
A guide from the valley, not a script. Where there is a specialist worth hearing — a woodworker, a caretaker who has been there forty years — we would rather you heard them than us.
How much walking is there?
Very little. Short walks in villages and around the buildings. This is a trip about looking and listening.
Can we combine it with the cold deserts or Deosai?
Easily — all three start in Skardu. Most people who have a week do two of them.
