Nanga Parbat Base Camp and Fairy Meadows
Overview
Fairy Meadows and Nanga Parbat Base Camp is a nine-day trip to the grass terrace below the Rakhiot face of the world’s ninth-highest mountain, at about 3,300 m. Three to five hours of walking a day on a path, not a glacier. It is the most accessible trek we run and the one we most often recommend to people who have not walked at altitude before.
Getting there is part of the trip
You drive the Karakoram Highway from Islamabad through the Indus gorge to Chilas — a long day and one of the great roads anywhere. At Raikot bridge you transfer to jeeps for the climb to Tato on a narrow unsealed road cut into the hillside. It is exposed, and it frightens more people than the walking does. We say so at booking rather than at the bridge.
From Tato it is a few hours on foot through pine forest to the meadow. Fairy Meadows is grass, trees and the Rakhiot glacier spilling off Nanga Parbat directly above you.
How hard is it?
Easy by the standards of the rest of this catalogue, and genuinely achievable if you can walk four hours comfortably and manage a short steep section. The day to Beyal and the viewpoint below the Rakhiot face is the longest, and it is optional for anybody having a bad morning.
The meadow sits at about 3,300 m and the viewpoint day climbs higher again, so if you have never slept above 3,000 m, tell us. It changes the profile, not whether we take you.
Is it suitable for families?
Often, yes. Tell us ages at enquiry and we will give you a straight answer for your family rather than a policy. The thing to think about is the jeep road, not the trekking.
When it runs
June to September. The meadow is under snow outside that and the jeep road to Tato closes. Nights are below freezing at the meadow even in midsummer, which surprises people arriving from a 40-degree afternoon in Islamabad.
Will you actually see Nanga Parbat?
From the meadow and from the viewpoint above Beyal, weather permitting. Cloud sits on the Rakhiot face often enough that we build two chances into the itinerary rather than selling you one. On a clear morning it is one of the largest mountain faces visible from anywhere you can walk to in a day.
What is inside the price
Permits, all road and jeep transport on our own vehicles with our own drivers, accommodation at the meadow, all meals, a guide on our payroll, and the same medical kit, satellite comms and written evacuation plan that go on every trip we run. The jeep sector is ours rather than hired at the bridge, which is the part of this trip where that matters most.

Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Questions people actually ask
Is this a good first trek in Pakistan?
Yes, and it is the one we recommend most often to people who have not walked at altitude before. Three to five hours a day on a path, with the scenery of a much harder trip.
How bad is the jeep road?
Narrow, unsealed and exposed, cut into the hillside above the Indus. It frightens people more than the walking does. Our own vehicles and our own drivers, and if you would rather walk a section you can.
How fit do I need to be?
Able to walk four hours comfortably with a daypack and manage a short steep section. That is genuinely the bar.
Can I bring children?
Often yes. Tell us their ages at enquiry and we will give you a straight answer for your family rather than a policy. The jeep road is the thing to think about, not the walking.
Will I actually see Nanga Parbat?
From Fairy Meadows and from the view point above Beyal, weather permitting. Cloud sits on the Rakhiot face often enough that we build a second day in rather than sell you one chance.
How cold is it at night?
Below freezing at the meadow outside midsummer, and chilly even in July. Bring the sleeping bag on the kit list.
Is there signal or power?
Patchy mobile signal at the meadow and limited solar power. We carry a satellite phone and send a message home each evening.
If this one is not quite right
The commonest reason a trip is wrong is that it is too hard or too easy, not that it is in the wrong place.
