Phander and Ghizer

Easy4 – 5 days3,000 m [confirm]May – OctoberGhizer & Phander · Jeep safari

Overview

A five-day journey west from Gilgit through the Ghizer valley to Phander Lake and Handrap. Road-based, easy, and the stretch of the Shandur route that almost every itinerary drives through on the way to somewhere else.

Ghizer

The Gilgit river runs the length of the valley, with villages, poplar and terraced fields along it and the Hindu Raj peaks above. It is one of the quietest inhabited places in Gilgit-Baltistan and it stays that way because the traffic is all heading for Shandur.

Phander

Phander Lake sits in a bowl of poplars with the river running in and out of it, and it is the single most photographed place in Ghizer for good reason. Handrap, a short drive beyond, is quieter still.

Why two nights rather than one

Because the valley rewards stopping and almost nobody does. Driven straight through, Ghizer is five hours of pleasant scenery. Given two nights, it is the part of the trip people remember.

Trout

The Gilgit river and the lake hold trout, and fishing is possible with a local permit. Tell us at enquiry if you want it arranged rather than hoping to sort it on the day.

When it runs

May to October.

What is inside the price

All permits and fees, our own 4x4s and drivers, hotels and guesthouses, all meals, and a guide on our payroll. Medical kit, satellite comms in the upper valley and a published evacuation procedure. The same road carries on to Chitral and the Kalash valleys. See the rest of Ghizer and Phander and our other jeep safaris.

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly

No fitness requirement and no trekking. The walking is short, flat and entirely optional — around the lake, through villages, down to the river.

The roads in Ghizer are reasonable by regional standards and the days are not long. This is one of the gentlest trips in the catalogue and suits older travellers and families without any adjustment. There is no altitude worth planning around.

Kit list

The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.

Group — we provide

  • All vehicles, drivers and fuel
  • Group first aid
  • Satellite phone where there is no mobile signal

Personal — yours

  • Layers for a wide temperature range; valley heat and pass cold on the same day
  • Comfortable walking shoes for short walks off the road
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Power bank; mains power is intermittent outside the towns
  • Personal medication and a declared medical history

Safety, evacuation and insurance

Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.

Carried on every departure

A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.

The rule that cannot be overruled

The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Getting there

Islamabad to Gilgit

By air when the weather allows, or by road up the Karakoram Highway. A buffer day either way.

Gilgit west into Ghizer

Along the Gilgit river on our own vehicles. Reasonable road by regional standards.

Onward

The same road carries on over the Shandur Pass to Chitral, if you want to continue rather than return.

Questions people actually ask

Why two nights in Phander?

Because the valley rewards stopping and almost nobody does. Driven straight through on the way to Shandur, Ghizer is five hours of pleasant scenery. Given two nights it is the part of the trip people remember.

How many days do I need?

Five from Gilgit, there and back. If you are carrying on over Shandur to Chitral, the same road continues and we will plan it as a crossing instead.

How fit do I need to be?

Not at all. Short, flat, optional walking around the lake and through villages. One of the gentlest trips we run.

Is it suitable for older travellers or families?

Yes, without adjustment. Reasonable roads, short days, no altitude and comfortable guesthouses.

How high does it get?

Around 3,000 m at Phander. We have no reliable second source for that, so it prints with a marker. There is no altitude here worth planning around.

Can we fish?

The river and the lake hold trout and fishing is possible with a local permit. Tell us at enquiry so it is arranged rather than hoped for on the day.

Do I need a permit?

No trekking permit. Ghizer is an open zone and your Pakistan visa is the paperwork that matters. Local fees and any fishing permit are handled by us.

What does it cost and what moves the price?

Party size and vehicle days. This is among the cheaper multi-day safaris we sell because the roads are good and the distances are moderate. Deposit is 25 per cent.

When is the best time to come?

May to October. June is greenest and the river is high; October brings the poplars round the lake and far fewer people. July and August are warm, and busier because the Shandur traffic is moving through.
