Hopper glacier and Nagar
Overview
A full day from Karimabad across the river into Nagar, to the Hopper glaciers below the village. One vehicle, a short walk to the viewpoint, and back by evening.
A glacier that does not look like one
The Hopper glacier is covered in black rock debris rather than white ice, which is why first-time visitors often do not realise what they are looking at. It moves measurably — several feet a day by local accounts — and from the village above you can watch the surface change over an afternoon if you sit still long enough.
Nagar
Hunza and Nagar face each other across the river and have entirely separate histories. Crossing from one to the other takes half an hour and almost no visitors do it, which is the main argument for the trip: it is the nearest thing to an unvisited valley you can reach from Karimabad before lunch.
Where the treks start
Hopar is also the roadhead for Rush Lake and the Barpu glacier. If you are considering one of those, this day gives you the first hour of the walk-in without committing to the rest.
When it runs
April to October.
What is inside the price
Transport and your own driver, a guide on our payroll, entry and local fees, a packed lunch and water. Group first aid, and the evacuation procedure we publish for every trip. See the rest of Nagar and our other day excursions.

Private departures and group pricing
Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.
| Party size | Price per person | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | USD 300 | Private guide and vehicle for the two of you |
| 3 – 4 | USD 240 | |
| 5 – 8 | USD 200 | Second guide joins at six |
Deposit is 25% of the trip price. The payment schedule and the cancellation terms are published and sent with every quote, before you pay anything.
Day by day
Buffer days are built in, not padding. If the weather takes them, nothing downstream collapses and you are not charged twice.

- Tips
If our price is wrong for you we will move you to a lower tier or remove a named inclusion. We do not discount a published price, and we do not cut the crew.
Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
No fitness requirement. The viewpoint above the glacier is a short walk from where the vehicle stops, on a rough but easy path.
If you want to go down onto the glacier surface itself, that is a different proposition — loose, uneven and genuinely hazardous in places — and we do it only with a guide and only where the ground is sound. It is optional and most people are satisfied with the view from above.
Kit list
The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.
Group — we provide
- Vehicle, driver and fuel
- Group first aid
- Water
Personal — yours
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Layers — valley warmth and viewpoint cold on the same morning
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Personal medication
Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.
Getting there
From Karimabad
Collected from your hotel after breakfast. Around an hour to Hopar by road.
The crossing
Down to the river, across, and up into Nagar. A different valley and a different history half an hour from your hotel.
Back
In Karimabad by evening.
Questions people actually ask
Why is the glacier black?
It is covered in rock debris rather than clean ice, which is why first-time visitors often do not realise what they are looking at. It is a working glacier underneath and it moves measurably — several feet a day by local accounts.
How long is the day, and when does it run?
A full day from Karimabad, back by evening. April to October.
How fit do I need to be?
Not at all. The viewpoint is a short walk from the vehicle on a rough but easy path. Going down onto the ice is optional and most people are happy with the view from above.
Can we walk on the glacier?
Only with the guide and only where the ground is sound. It is loose, uneven and genuinely hazardous in places. We will say no on the day if conditions do not support it.
How high is Hopar?
Around 2,800 m. We have no reliable second source for that, so it carries a marker. There is no altitude concern on this trip.
Do I need a permit?
No. Nagar is an open zone and your Pakistan visa is the only paperwork. Local fees are in the price.
What does it cost and what moves the price?
Party size, almost entirely — one vehicle, one driver and one guide regardless of how many seats are filled. Deposit is 25 per cent.
Is this useful before a Rush Lake trek?
Yes. Hopar is the roadhead for Rush Lake and the Barpu glacier, so this day gives you the first hour of that walk-in without committing to the rest of it.
If this one is not quite right
You have already chosen the region, which is the harder decision. These run from the same roadhead.
