Gandhara and Taxila
Overview
A five-day journey around Taxila and the Gandhara sites west of Islamabad. Road-based, easy, and designed as a winter product for the months when the north is closed.
Why this exists in our catalogue
Because from December to March most of what we sell is unreachable, and Gandhara is at its best exactly then — dry, mild and empty. We are a mountain operator running a plains trip in the off-season, and we say that plainly rather than pretending it is our specialism.
Taxila
The Taxila sites cover more than a thousand years and several cities, with Buddhist monasteries, stupas and a museum holding one of the best Gandharan sculpture collections anywhere. The Gandharan style — Hellenistic form applied to Buddhist subjects, from a region that had been ruled from Greece and then from India — is the reason art historians come.
The wider plain
Beyond Taxila there is Takht-i-Bahi, a hillside monastery complex that is the best preserved of its kind, and the Peshawar museum if security assessment allows on the dates you travel. We will say plainly what we recommend rather than including something we would not do ourselves.
When it runs
October to March. Summer on the Gandhara plain is extremely hot and we do not sell it then.
What is inside the price
All site and museum entries, our own vehicles and drivers, hotels in Islamabad, all meals, and a guide on our payroll who knows the material. Medical kit and a published evacuation procedure. Swat is the other half of the Buddhist story and runs in the shoulder seasons. See the rest of Punjab and Sindh and our other cultural journeys.

- Tips
If our price is wrong for you we will move you to a lower tier or remove a named inclusion. We do not discount a published price, and we do not cut the crew.
Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
No fitness requirement. Walking around archaeological sites on uneven ground, with some steps and some slopes, for a few hours at a time.
Takht-i-Bahi is on a hillside and involves a climb of fifteen to twenty minutes to reach the main complex. Everything else is close to level. Tell us about mobility at enquiry and we will plan which sites you walk and which you see from the vehicle.
Kit list
The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.
Group — we provide
- All vehicles, drivers and fuel
- Group first aid
- Satellite phone where there is no mobile signal
Personal — yours
- Layers for a wide temperature range; valley heat and pass cold on the same day
- Comfortable walking shoes for short walks off the road
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Power bank; mains power is intermittent outside the towns
- Personal medication and a declared medical history
Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Questions people actually ask
Why does a mountain operator sell a plains trip?
Because from December to March most of what we sell is unreachable, and Gandhara is at its best exactly then — dry, mild and empty. We say plainly that this is an off-season product rather than pretending it is our specialism.
How many days do I need, and when should I come?
Five covers Taxila properly and Takht-i-Bahi. October to March. Summer on the Gandhara plain is extremely hot and we do not sell it then.
How fit do I need to be?
Not very. Walking around sites on uneven ground with some steps. Takht-i-Bahi involves a fifteen to twenty minute climb; everything else is close to level.
What is Gandharan art?
Hellenistic form applied to Buddhist subjects, from a region ruled from Greece and then from India. It is why the earliest Buddha images look the way they do, and it is the reason art historians come to Taxila.
Is it safe?
We assess the route before each departure and will say plainly what we recommend. The Peshawar museum is included only when the assessment supports it, rather than listed and quietly dropped.
Do I need a permit?
No. Site and museum entry fees apply and are in the price. Your Pakistan visa is the paperwork that matters and we send a sponsor letter for it.
How high is it?
Low — the Gandhara plain sits well under 1,500 m. Altitude is not a consideration on this trip, which is part of why it works for travellers who cannot go high.
What does it cost and what moves the price?
Party size and hotel standard. It is one of the cheaper trips we run because the distances are short and there is no mountain logistics in it. Deposit is 25 per cent.
