Manthal Buddha rock and Skardu heritage
Overview
A three-day journey around Skardu for the Manthal Buddha rock, Kharpocho fort and the older layers of the valley. Road-based, easy, and the trip that explains what Baltistan was before it was Muslim.
The Manthal Buddha
A large seated Buddha carved in relief on a granite boulder at Manthal, on the edge of Skardu toward Satpara. It is usually dated to the Buddhist period of the region, and it is the clearest surviving evidence that this valley sat on a route between Kashmir, Ladakh and Central Asia long before the present religious geography settled.
It is not well signed, not well protected, and sits on the edge of a village. That is part of why it is worth going with someone who knows what you are looking at.
Kharpocho
The fort above Skardu, built by the Maqpon rajas, looks down on the confluence of the Indus and the Shigar. It is a steep twenty-minute climb and the best orientation to the whole valley you will get.
Satpara and the valley
Satpara Lake above the town, the old town itself, and the rock art that turns up on boulders along the Indus if you know where to look. Baltistan’s Tibetan inheritance is in the language, the architecture and the names, and this trip is the one that makes that visible.
When it runs
March to November.

Private departures and group pricing
Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.
| Party size | Price per person | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | USD 1,100 | A full crew for two people |
| 3 – 4 | USD 900 | |

Deposit is 25% of the trip price. The payment schedule and the cancellation terms are published and sent with every quote, before you pay anything.

- Tips
If our price is wrong for you we will move you to a lower tier or remove a named inclusion. We do not discount a published price, and we do not cut the crew.
Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
No fitness requirement with one exception: the climb up to Kharpocho fort is steep for about twenty minutes. Skip it and you lose nothing else on the trip, and the vehicle waits either way.
The Manthal Buddha is a short flat walk from the road. Nothing on this trip is high enough for altitude to matter and nothing requires more than comfortable shoes.
Kit list
The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.
Group — we provide
- All vehicles, drivers and fuel
- Group first aid
- Satellite phone where there is no mobile signal
Personal — yours
- Layers for a wide temperature range; valley heat and pass cold on the same day
- Comfortable walking shoes for short walks off the road
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Power bank; mains power is intermittent outside the towns
- Personal medication and a declared medical history
Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Questions people actually ask
What is the Manthal Buddha?
A large seated Buddha carved in relief on a granite boulder at the edge of Skardu, from the Buddhist period of the region. It is the clearest surviving evidence that this valley sat on a route between Kashmir, Ladakh and Central Asia long before the present religious geography settled.
How many days do I need, and when can I come?
Three is comfortable and two covers the main sites. March to November. Most people attach it to time they were already spending in Skardu.
How fit do I need to be?
Not at all, except that Kharpocho is a steep twenty-minute climb. Skip it and you lose nothing else on the trip.
Is the Buddha rock looked after?
Not especially. It is not well signed, not well protected and sits on the edge of a village. That is part of why it is worth going with someone who knows what you are looking at, and part of why we ask people to be careful around it.
How high is Skardu?
2,230 m. Nothing on this trip goes meaningfully higher, and altitude is not a consideration.
Do I need a permit?
No. Skardu is an open zone and your Pakistan visa is the only paperwork. Site fees where they apply are in the price.
What does it cost and what moves the price?
Party size and hotel standard. This is among the cheapest trips in the catalogue — short days, a vehicle and two nights. Deposit is 25 per cent.
How does this fit with the Baltistan forts trip?
It is the layer underneath it. The forts and mosques journey covers Baltistan's Muslim heritage across Shigar and Khaplu; this one covers what was in the Skardu valley before that.
If this one is not quite right
You have already chosen the region, which is the harder decision. These run from the same roadhead.
