Trango Towers — Nameless Tower
Overview
A thirty-eight-day big-wall expedition to Nameless Tower in the Trango group, above the Baltoro glacier. This is a rock climbing trip. It is listed separately from our expeditions because the audience, the kit, the skills and the entire shape of the day are different from a snow-and-altitude mountain.
What Nameless Tower is
A granite spire standing clear of the Trango massif on the north side of the Baltoro, and one of the defining objectives of Karakoram rock climbing since the 1970s. The walls here are among the largest and steepest anywhere, and the Trango group carries some of the longest near-vertical rock on earth.
What the trip actually involves
A fortnight of approach and walk out on the Baltoro, then weeks at a base camp below the walls, with load-carrying to the foot of the route, fixing, and a push that may involve portaledge nights depending on the line and the team. Weather stops more attempts here than difficulty does.
What we ask of you
Hard multi-pitch rock experience, big-wall systems — hauling, jumaring, portaledge work — and the ability to operate on granite at altitude in cold conditions. This is not a mountain that can be guided in the usual sense, and we are honest about the role we play: logistics, base camp, crew, permits, safety cover and local knowledge, with the climbing led by your team.
Permits
Nameless Tower sits in the band below 6,500 m, where no peak royalty is charged — which makes a big-wall expedition here markedly cheaper than a seven-thousander. A trekking permit, park fees and a registered guide still apply.
What is inside the price
Permits and park fees, jeeps to Askole, a Balti porter crew under our published porter charter for a heavy load a long way, base camp with cook and mess for the full stay, satellite comms and weather forecasting, our own staff at base camp throughout, and an evacuation plan that assumes the helicopter may not come. For granite without the wall, the Nangma valley is the trekking version. See the rest of the Baltoro and Concordia and our other climbing trips.

- Tips
If our price is wrong for you we will move you to a lower tier or remove a named inclusion. We do not discount a published price, and we do not cut the crew.
Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
This is not a trek and fitness alone will not get you up it. We require hard multi-pitch rock experience, fluency in big-wall systems — hauling, jumaring, portaledge work — and the ability to keep operating on granite in cold at altitude. Teams come with those skills; they are not taught here.
The physical demand is a fortnight of Baltoro approach and walk out, then weeks of load-carrying to the foot of the route and days on the wall. Be clear about what we are and are not: we provide the permits, the crew, the base camp, the comms and the safety cover. The climbing is led by your team. If you are looking to be guided up this, we are not the right operator and we will say so at enquiry.
Kit list
The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.
Group — we provide
- Base camp tents, mess, kitchen and toilet
- Base camp medical kit and oxygen
- Satellite comms, weather forecasting and messenger
- Cook and base camp staff for the full stay
Personal and team — yours
- All climbing hardware, rope, haul bags and portaledges
- Big-wall systems kit — ascenders, haulers, docking cord
- Rock shoes, approach shoes and mountain boots
- Sleeping bag rated to −20 °C or better for base camp, plus a wall bag
- Down jacket and full waterproof shell
- Headtorch with spares, and a power bank
- Personal medication and a declared medical history
Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.
Getting there
Islamabad
Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, SIM and cash sorted.
Islamabad to Skardu
A short flight that is weather-dependent, or two days by road that are not. We build buffer days either way and quote both.
Skardu to Askole
Seven to nine hours by jeep up the Braldu valley on a road that is regularly blocked by landslide. Our own 4x4s and our own drivers.
From Askole
On foot. There is no road beyond it and no vehicle access at any point on the trek.
Questions people actually ask
Do you guide this, or support it?
Support it. We provide permits, the porter crew, base camp, comms, forecasting and safety cover, and the climbing is led by your team. Nameless Tower is not a mountain that can be guided in the usual sense and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.
How many days does it take?
Thirty-eight door to door, of which about a fortnight is the Baltoro approach and the walk out. The rest is base camp, load carries, fixing and the push.
What experience do you require?
Hard multi-pitch rock, fluency in big-wall systems — hauling, jumaring, portaledge work — and the ability to operate on granite in cold at altitude. Teams arrive with those skills.
How high is Nameless Tower?
Around 6,239 m. We have one source for that figure and have not yet matched it against a second, so it prints with a marker until we have. Great Trango next to it is higher.
What permits does it need, and is there a royalty?
It sits in the band below 6,500 m, where no peak royalty is charged — which makes this markedly cheaper than a seven-thousander. A trekking permit, Central Karakoram National Park fees and a registered guide still apply, and we obtain all of it. We quote the live fee schedule at enquiry rather than from memory.
What does it cost and what moves the price?
Porter stages, because a big-wall load is heavy and the Baltoro is long. Then the length of base camp stay, which on a wall trip is driven by weather rather than by plan. No royalty is payable, which is the single biggest saving against a comparable seven-thousander. Deposit is 25 per cent.
When is the season?
June to August for a full expedition. Settled weather is the limiting factor on granite far more than temperature is, and weather stops more attempts here than difficulty does.
Can we bring our own ropes and wall kit?
You must. All climbing hardware, rope, haul bags and portaledges are yours. We carry none of it, because a team's wall kit is a team's own system and substituting it is how accidents happen.
If this one is not quite right
You have already chosen the region, which is the harder decision. These run from the same roadhead.
