Autumn colour in Hunza and Baltistan

Easy7 – 9 days2,500 m [confirm]October – NovemberHunza · Cultural journey

Overview

A nine-day journey through Hunza and Baltistan for the autumn colour, when the poplars and apricot terraces turn through October and into November. Road-based, easy, and the season most people who have been twice come back for.

When the colour actually runs

Generally from the second week of October into mid-November, moving down the valleys as the season goes. Gojal turns first, then Hunza, then the lower Gilgit and Skardu valleys. That spread is useful: a trip timed across it catches colour somewhere for most of its length rather than gambling on one valley on one week.

Dates move with the year, and we will tell you what the valleys are actually doing in the weeks before you travel rather than quoting an average.

Why it beats spring

Blossom is a narrower window and a busier one. Autumn runs longer, the air is clearer after the summer haze, the peaks have fresh snow on them, and there are far fewer people. The trade is cold nights and a shorter day.

Both sides

Most autumn trips stay in Hunza. This one crosses to Skardu as well, because Baltistan turns later and the Shigar and Khaplu valleys are full of apricot and walnut. It also means the trip is not dependent on one valley’s timing.

When it runs

October and November.

What is inside the price

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly

No fitness requirement and no trekking. Short optional walks through terraces and villages, and stairs in the forts if you visit them.

The thing to prepare for is cold rather than exertion. October nights in Hunza are properly cold and November more so, heating in valley hotels is variable, and the days are shorter than in summer. Pack as though for a cold hill day rather than a holiday and you will enjoy it considerably more.

Kit list

The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.

Group — we provide

  • All vehicles, drivers and fuel
  • Group first aid
  • Satellite phone where there is no mobile signal

Personal — yours

  • Layers for a wide temperature range; valley heat and pass cold on the same day
  • Comfortable walking shoes for short walks off the road
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Power bank; mains power is intermittent outside the towns
  • Personal medication and a declared medical history

Safety, evacuation and insurance

Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.

Carried on every departure

A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.

The rule that cannot be overruled

The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Questions people actually ask

When exactly is the autumn colour?

Generally from the second week of October into mid-November, moving down the valleys as the season goes — Gojal first, then Hunza, then Baltistan. Dates move with the year and we will tell you what the valleys are actually doing in the weeks before you travel rather than quoting an average.

How is it better than the spring blossom?

It runs longer, the air is clearer after the summer haze, the peaks have fresh snow, and there are far fewer people. The trade is cold nights and a shorter day.

How many days do I need?

Nine, which covers both Hunza and Baltistan. The spread between the two is the point — it means the trip is not hanging on one valley turning in the week you booked.

How fit do I need to be?

Not at all. Short optional walks and stairs in the forts. The thing to prepare for is cold, not exertion.

How cold does it get?

Properly cold at night in October and more so in November, with variable heating in valley hotels. Pack as though for a cold hill day rather than a holiday.

How high does it get?

Around 2,500 m. We have no second source for that, so it carries a marker. There is no altitude on this trip worth planning around.

Do I need a permit?

No. Every valley on this route is an open zone and your Pakistan visa is the only paperwork. Entry fees are in the price.

What does it cost and what moves the price?

Party size and hotel standard. October is shoulder season, so the better hotels are both available and cheaper than in July. Deposit is 25 per cent.
