Hunza heritage — Baltit and Altit

Easy3 – 4 days2,500 m [confirm]March – NovemberHunza · Cultural journey

Overview

A four-day journey in Hunza built around Baltit and Altit forts and the old settlements beneath them. Road-based, easy, and the one trip here where the buildings rather than the mountains are the point.

Baltit

Baltit Fort stands above Karimabad with Rakaposhi at 7,788 m directly opposite. It is around seven hundred years old in its earliest fabric, was abandoned in the 1940s when the Mir moved down the hill, and was restored through the 1990s by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The restoration is as interesting as the building — it is one of the most carefully documented conservation projects in the region.

Altit

Altit Fort below it is older still, and the restored settlement of Altit Khun around it is the part most visitors skip. Narrow lanes, timber and stone houses, a working village rather than a display. We spend a morning there rather than twenty minutes.

What a guide is for

Both forts sell tickets and both have signage. What they do not have is somebody who can explain why a Tibetan roof structure sits on a Central Asian plan in a valley that traded with both, which is the thing worth understanding. Our guide is on our payroll and has done this before.

When it runs

March to November. Blossom through late March and April, autumn colour through October, and the forts are quietest at either end of the season.

What is inside the price

All fees and entries, our own vehicles and drivers, hotels in Karimabad, all meals, and a guide on our payroll. Medical kit and a published evacuation procedure. Pair it with Hunza, Attabad and Passu for the valley, or the autumn colour trip for the season. See the rest of Hunza and our other cultural journeys.

Private departures and group pricing

Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly

No fitness requirement, but be steady on stairs. Both forts are old buildings on steep ground with narrow stone steps, low doorways and no handrails, and Baltit is a climb up through the old settlement before you even reach it.

Neither building is step-free and neither can be made so. Tell us about mobility at enquiry and we will plan which you go into and which you see from the courtyard, rather than discovering the problem at the bottom of a staircase. There is no altitude here worth planning around.

Kit list

The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.

Group — we provide

  • All vehicles, drivers and fuel
  • Group first aid
  • Satellite phone where there is no mobile signal

Personal — yours

  • Layers for a wide temperature range; valley heat and pass cold on the same day
  • Comfortable walking shoes for short walks off the road
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Power bank; mains power is intermittent outside the towns
  • Personal medication and a declared medical history

Safety, evacuation and insurance

Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.

Carried on every departure

A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.

The rule that cannot be overruled

The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Getting there

Islamabad

Met inside the terminal. Briefing the same evening, SIM and cash sorted.

Islamabad to Gilgit

By air when the weather allows, or by road up the Karakoram Highway when it does not. A buffer day either way.

On the ground

Our own vehicles and our own drivers from Gilgit onward.

Questions people actually ask

How old is Baltit Fort?

Around seven hundred years in its earliest fabric, though it was rebuilt and extended repeatedly. It was abandoned in the 1940s when the Mir moved down the hill and restored through the 1990s by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

Is it a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

No, and several operators say it is. It sits on the tentative list and the restoration won an Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Both are worth knowing; neither is World Heritage listing.

How many days do I need, and when should I come?

Four is comfortable and gives both forts a proper morning each. March to November — blossom in late March and April, autumn colour through October, and the forts quietest at either end of the season.

How fit do I need to be?

Not fit, but steady on stairs. Narrow stone steps, low doorways and no handrails in both buildings, and a climb up through the settlement to reach Baltit.

Is it worth a guide rather than a ticket?

We think so, which is why one is in the price. Both forts have signage. Neither explains why a Tibetan roof structure sits on a Central Asian plan in a valley that traded with both.

How high is Hunza?

Karimabad sits around 2,400 m. We have no second source for the figure we print, so it carries a marker. A few people notice the first night and almost nobody notices the second.

Do I need a permit?

No. Hunza is an open zone and your Pakistan visa is the only paperwork. Fort entry fees are in the price.

What does it cost and what moves the price?

Party size and hotel standard — Hunza has genuinely good places to stay and some very ordinary ones, and the gap between them is most of the difference. Deposit is 25 per cent.
