Hispar Muztagh reconnaissance — unclimbed 7,000 m objective
Overview
A 38-day exploratory expedition into the Hispar Muztagh — the range between the Hispar and Biafo glaciers — to an unclimbed 6,000 m peak. Maximum four climbers. The longest and most committing of our three first-ascent trips, because the approach alone is a serious glacier journey before the climbing starts.
Why 38 days
Because you walk up the Hispar glacier to get there. The approach is a week of glacier travel from Hispar village, much of it roped, before base camp is established — and the walk out is the same again. That leaves roughly three weeks on the mountain, which is the minimum for reconnoitring and attempting an objective nobody has climbed.
Once base camp is in, you are a week from the road. Every decision about weather, health and commitment is made with that number in mind, and it is the reason this trip carries the evacuation planning it does.
The range
The Hispar Muztagh sits above the Hispar glacier and below the Snow Lake basin, holding Kanjut Sar, Distaghil Sar and Trivor among the big peaks and an unusual number of unclimbed 6,000 m summits between them. It is one of the least-visited parts of the Karakoram, which is exactly why the shortlist exists.
What the climbing is like
Mixed — snow, ice and rock in whatever proportion the chosen peak turns out to have. We go in with a shortlist and photographs taken from the glacier on previous trips, but the upper mountains in this range are genuinely poorly documented and the line gets decided when you can see it.
Who we take
Alpine experience at AD or above with real mixed-ground competence, previous expedition experience in a remote range, demonstrable self-sufficiency, and references we call. Four maximum. Of our three exploratory trips this is the one we turn people down for most often, and the reason is always the remoteness rather than the technical grade.
Naming and the record
Any ascent is recorded with the Alpine Club of Pakistan — route, GPS altitude, date, party. Where a local name exists we use it. Where one does not, naming is a conversation with the Hispar and Nagar communities whose valley it is, not a decision made at base camp.
What is inside the price
Peak royalty and permits for the agreed objective, the trekking visa file, all transport on our own vehicles to Hispar, the full glacier approach and base camp under our published porter charter, camp and kitchen for the whole 38 days, group rope, crevasse-rescue gear and climbing hardware, Nagar and Hispar high-altitude climbers on the team, oxygen held for emergency use, satellite comms with daily forecasting, and a stage-by-stage written evacuation plan built on the assumption that you walk out.

Fixed departures
These prices are per person on a fixed departure, and they are the price — we do not discount a published figure. Deposit is 30%; the payment schedule and cancellation terms are published and sent with every quote. For your own dates, see the private pricing below.
Private departures and group pricing
Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.

Buffer days are built in, not padding. If the weather takes them, nothing downstream collapses and you are not charged twice.

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
Previous experience above 7,000 m is a condition of joining this expedition, not a preference. You should be competent leading on snow and ice, able to carry at altitude for a sustained period, and willing to spend weeks on a glacier with no outside contact except the radio schedule.
We will turn down a booking for this trip if the experience is not there. That is not a sales tactic. Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed, the drive-out from this valley is measured in days, and the margin for someone learning on the job does not exist.

The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.

Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Questions people actually ask
How can you sell a climb without knowing which peak?
Because that is how a first ascent actually works. We hold a permit for an area, go in, look at what is there, and commit to an objective the lead guide judges we can attempt safely. Anyone selling you a named unclimbed summit with a fixed itinerary is selling a story.
What are the chances of reaching a summit?
Lower than on an established route and we will not pretend otherwise. A first-ascent trip that comes home having looked at three objectives and attempted one has done what it set out to do.
What experience do I need?
Previous expedition experience and competence on unknown ground. We are not teaching you to climb out here and we will decline a booking where the record is not there.
Who owns the first ascent?
You do, with the crew who got you there, and we will credit the guides and the high-altitude staff by name in anything we publish. That is not negotiable from our side.
What if the objective turns out to be unsafe?
We walk away and look at another one. That is the expected course of this trip, not a failure of it, and it is why the itinerary has reconnaissance time rather than a fixed summit day.
Is it already climbed and nobody recorded it?
Possibly, and we will say so if we find evidence on the ground. The published records for this part of the Karakoram are incomplete and we would rather tell you that than sell you a certainty.
What communications are there?
Satellite phone with the group and a messenger with the lead guide, with a daily call to this office and a message home each evening.
Can I bring my own climbing partner?
Yes, and it is usually better. Private departures only on these trips, two to six climbers, because a first ascent is a judgement exercise and judgement does not scale.
If this one is not quite right
The commonest reason a trip is wrong is that it is too hard or too easy, not that it is in the wrong place.
