Rakaposhi expedition

Extreme35 – 42 days7,788 mJune – AugustNagar · Expedition

Overview

A forty-two-day expedition to Rakaposhi, the mountain standing over the Hunza valley at 7,788 m. It rises almost six thousand metres from the valley floor in a single sweep, which is among the greatest uninterrupted rises on earth, and it has one of the lowest summit tallies of any major Karakoram peak.

Why so few people have climbed it

Rakaposhi is long, heavily corniced and exposed to weather from three sides, with avalanche-prone ground low on the route and a summit ridge that holds snow badly. It is a serious undertaking by any measure and it is not a commercial trade-route mountain. We say that plainly because the view from the Karakoram Highway makes it look approachable and it is not.

What we ask of you

A verified seven-thousander summit, with technical ground and sustained altitude on it, and ideally an eight-thousander. We check the record rather than take your word for it. This is not a first seven-thousander and we will say no.

The approach

Short by Karakoram standards — base camp is reached in days from the Karakoram Highway rather than weeks from a roadhead. That is a logistical advantage and an acclimatisation problem, and we build the acclimatisation deliberately rather than relying on the approach to provide it.

When it runs

June to August.

What is inside the price

Peak royalty, climbing permit, liaison officer, local and park fees, and insurance for every member of the crew. Guides on our own payroll, at the ratios we publish, working to published turn-back criteria. Base camp and high camps, cook and all meals, fixed rope and group hardware, supplementary oxygen to the published allocation, satellite comms and dedicated weather forecasting, and an evacuation plan that assumes the helicopter may not come. To stand under the face rather than climb it, see Rakaposhi Base Camp; Diran is the gentler 7,000 m peak across the glacier. The rest of Nagar and our other Karakoram expeditions.

Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly

A verified seven-thousander summit with technical ground and sustained altitude on it, and ideally an eight-thousander. We check the record. This is not a first seven-thousander and we will say no to one.

The mountain looks approachable from the Karakoram Highway and it is not. It is long, heavily corniced, exposed to weather from three sides, with avalanche-prone ground low on the route. Few people have climbed it and that is not an accident of fashion. Expect six weeks, expect most of them to be waiting, and expect to come down without the summit — on this mountain that is the usual outcome rather than the exception.

Kit list

The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.

Group — we provide

  • Base camp and high-camp tents, mess, kitchen and toilet
  • Fixed rope, snow stakes and group climbing hardware
  • Supplementary oxygen, masks and regulators where the plan calls for it
  • Base camp medical kit, and a doctor where the team size requires one
  • Satellite comms, weather forecasting and a daily message home

Personal — yours

  • Double boots rated for the altitude band
  • Down suit, and a separate insulated jacket for base camp
  • Harness, ascender, descender, carabiners, ice axe and crampons
  • Sleeping bag rated to −30 °C or better, plus a warmer base camp bag
  • Glacier glasses and goggles, both with a spare
  • Headtorch with spares, and a power bank
  • Personal medication, and a full declared medical history

Safety, evacuation and insurance

Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.

Carried on every departure

A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.

The rule that cannot be overruled

The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Getting there

Islamabad

Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, SIM and cash sorted.

Islamabad to Gilgit

By air when the weather allows, or by road up the Karakoram Highway when it does not. A buffer day either way.

On the ground

Our own vehicles and our own drivers from Gilgit onward.

Questions people actually ask

Why have so few people climbed Rakaposhi?

Because it is long, heavily corniced, exposed to weather from three sides, with avalanche-prone ground low on the route and a summit ridge that holds snow badly. It is not a trade-route mountain and the view from the highway makes it look far more approachable than it is.

What experience do you require?

A verified seven-thousander summit with technical ground and sustained altitude on it, ideally an eight-thousander. We check the record rather than take your word for it. This is not a first seven-thousander.

How long is the expedition, and when does it run?

Forty-two days door to door. June to August, with the summit window if there is one usually in July.

How high is it?

7,788 m, and it rises almost six thousand metres from the Hunza valley floor in a single sweep — among the greatest uninterrupted rises anywhere on earth.

Does the short approach help?

It helps the logistics and hurts the acclimatisation. Base camp is days from the Karakoram Highway rather than weeks from a roadhead, so you arrive with less altitude in your legs. We build the acclimatisation deliberately rather than relying on the walk in.

What permits and royalty does it need?

A peak royalty, a climbing permit, a liaison officer, and local and park fees in Nagar, plus crew insurance. All of it is in the price and itemised. A permit covers one peak. Royalty bands were revised recently and published figures disagree, so we quote the live schedule at enquiry.

What does it cost and what moves the price?

Team size, because royalty is charged per team with a per-member addition, and the party is capped at six on this mountain. Then the length of season you hold. Deposit is 30 per cent above 6,500 m.

What are the chances of summiting?

Low, and we will not dress that up. We do not publish a success rate because we have not run enough departures to quote one honestly, but Rakaposhi turns back most parties that attempt it. Come for the mountain, not for a certainty.
