Diran expedition
Overview
A twenty-eight-day expedition to Diran in Nagar, the snow dome at the head of the Minapin glacier opposite Rakaposhi. It is often described as a straightforward seven-thousander and it has a long accident history, which are facts that belong in the same sentence.
Why the reputation is misleading
Diran is a snow mountain without sustained technical difficulty, which is what has drawn under-prepared parties to it for decades. The hazards are avalanche, crevasse and whiteout on a broad featureless face where navigation is genuinely hard in poor visibility. None of those are solved by being a strong climber; they are solved by conditions, timing and a willingness to turn round.
What we ask of you
A verified six-thousander summit with real snow and altitude on it, and competence on a rope on glacier. We check it. For most climbers Diran is a second or third high peak, not a first.
The approach
Short by Karakoram standards — up from Minapin through the base-camp meadow, which means you arrive with less acclimatisation in your legs than a Baltoro approach would have given you. We build the acclimatisation deliberately and it is not negotiable.
When it runs
June to August.
What is inside the price
Peak royalty, climbing permit, liaison officer, park and local fees, and insurance for every member of the crew. Guides on our own payroll, at the ratios we publish, working to turn-back criteria the office cannot overrule. Base camp and high camps, cook and all meals, fixed rope and group hardware, satellite comms and dedicated weather forecasting, and an evacuation plan that assumes the helicopter may not come. If this is a step too far, Spantik is the usual first seven-thousander. See the rest of Nagar and our other Karakoram expeditions.

Private departures and group pricing
Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.
| Party size | Price per person | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | USD 6,150 | A full crew for two people |
| 3 – 4 | USD 5,150 | |
| 5 – 8 | USD 4,300 | Second guide joins at six |
Deposit is 30% of the trip price. The payment schedule and the cancellation terms are published and sent with every quote, before you pay anything.

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
A verified six-thousander summit with real snow and altitude on it, plus competence on a rope on glacier. We check it rather than take your word for it. For most climbers Diran is a second or third high peak, not a first.
The physical demand is four weeks, with a short approach and a long wait. The honest warning is about judgement rather than fitness: Diran has no sustained technical difficulty and a long accident history, and the two are connected. Avalanche, crevasse and whiteout navigation on a broad featureless face are not solved by being strong. If you want a mountain where pushing on is usually survivable, this is not it.
Kit list
The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.
Group — we provide
- Base camp and high-camp tents, mess, kitchen and toilet
- Fixed rope, snow stakes and group climbing hardware
- Supplementary oxygen, masks and regulators where the plan calls for it
- Base camp medical kit, and a doctor where the team size requires one
- Satellite comms, weather forecasting and a daily message home
Personal — yours
- Double boots rated for the altitude band
- Down suit, and a separate insulated jacket for base camp
- Harness, ascender, descender, carabiners, ice axe and crampons
- Sleeping bag rated to −30 °C or better, plus a warmer base camp bag
- Glacier glasses and goggles, both with a spare
- Headtorch with spares, and a power bank
- Personal medication, and a full declared medical history
Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.
Getting there
Islamabad
Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, SIM and cash sorted.
Islamabad to Gilgit
By air when the weather allows, which is the short way and the one that cancels. By road up the Karakoram Highway when it does not — long, reliable, and scenery rather than dead time.
On the ground
Our own vehicles and our own drivers from Gilgit onward.
Questions people actually ask
Is Diran an easy 7,000 m peak?
It has no sustained technical difficulty and a long accident history, and those two facts belong in the same sentence. The hazards are avalanche, crevasse and whiteout navigation on a broad featureless face, none of which are solved by being a strong climber.
What experience do you require?
A verified six-thousander summit with real snow and altitude on it, and competence on a rope on glacier. We check it. For most climbers this is a second or third high peak rather than a first.
How long is the expedition?
Twenty-eight days door to door. The approach is short by Karakoram standards, so most of the time is rotations and waiting at base camp.
Does the short approach help or hurt?
Both. You spend less time walking in, and you arrive with less acclimatisation in your legs than a Baltoro approach would have given you. We build the acclimatisation deliberately and it is not negotiable.
How high is Diran exactly?
Sources give 7,266 m and 7,273 m. We have not settled which is right, so the figure prints with a marker. It makes no difference to how the mountain is climbed and we would rather show the uncertainty than pick one.
What permits and royalty does it need?
A peak royalty, a climbing permit, a liaison officer, and local and park fees in Nagar, plus insurance for every member of the crew. All of it is in the price and itemised. Royalty bands were revised recently and published figures disagree, so we quote the live schedule at enquiry.
What does it cost and what moves the price?
Team size, because royalty is charged per team with a per-member addition. After that the length of season you hold. The short approach makes this one of the cheaper 7,000 m expeditions in the Karakoram. Deposit is 30 per cent above 6,500 m.
When does it run?
June to August, with the summit window usually in July. We will say plainly if we think a departure should not go.
If this one is not quite right
The commonest reason a trip is wrong is that it is too hard or too easy, not that it is in the wrong place.
- A step easier Rush Peak — K2 viewpoint summit
- A step harder Hispar Muztagh reconnaissance — unclimbed 7,000 m objective
You have already chosen the region, which is the harder decision. These run from the same roadhead.
