Rakaposhi Base Camp from Minapin
Overview
A seven-day trip to Rakaposhi Base Camp, walking up from Minapin in Nagar to the meadow below the north face. Two days up, a day at the camp, a day down. It is the shortest real trek in our catalogue and the one we recommend most often to people who want a Karakoram trek and have a week.
The walk
From Minapin the path climbs steeply through the forest to the Hapakun meadow, then on along the Minapin glacier to the base camp meadow usually called Tagaphari. The whole north face of Rakaposhi stands above it at 7,788 m, with Diran at the other end of the glacier. The ascent is sustained rather than technical: no rope, no glacier travel, and nothing that needs more than boots and poles.
Short does not mean easy
This is the trek people most often underestimate. The climb out of Minapin is relentless and most of the height is gained on one day. We take two days to the base camp meadow where a fit party could do it in one, for the reasons set out in our acclimatisation and turn-back criteria, because arriving late and wrecked at a camp you then have to sleep at is how a short trek becomes a medical problem.
When it runs
May to October, which is a longer season than most Karakoram treks because the camp is not especially high. Early summer is green and the streams are full; September and October are clear, cold at night and the best for the face.
What is inside the price
Permits and fees where they apply, transport on our own vehicles, a hotel in Hunza either side, full camp with cook and mess, a Nagar porter crew under our published porter charter with loads weighed in front of you, guides on our payroll, satellite phone above the village and a written evacuation plan for every camp. When this is no longer enough, Rush Lake and Rush Pari is the next step up in the same valley, and Hunza, Attabad and Passu is the road trip either side of it. See the rest of Nagar and our other Karakoram treks.

Day by day
Buffer days are built in, not padding. If the weather takes them, nothing downstream collapses and you are not charged twice.
01 Gilgit to Minapin Hotel
Met at Gilgit and up the highway into Nagar. Crew and loads meet us at the village; kit check in the afternoon.
02 Minapin to Hapakun Camp
Steeply out of the village through the forest to the meadow. Short day, most of it uphill.
03 Hapakun to Tagaphari Camp
Along the edge of the Minapin glacier to the base-camp meadow under the north face.
04 At the base camp Camp
A day at the meadow with the face above. Walk higher along the glacier edge if the weather is good, or do nothing, which is also a plan.
05 Tagaphari to Minapin Hotel
The whole descent in one day, which is hard on the knees and quicker than you expect.
06 Minapin to Hunza Hotel · 2,400 m
Short drive up to Karimabad. Kit return, debrief, and a proper bed.

- Tips
If our price is wrong for you we will move you to a lower tier or remove a named inclusion. We do not discount a published price, and we do not cut the crew.
Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
Four walking days, of which two are steep and sustained. The climb out of Minapin gains most of the height of the trek and it does not relent. Five to seven hours on the longer days, on a good path, carrying a daypack.
This is the trek people underestimate because it is short. Short and steep is harder on the legs than long and gradual, and the descent is where most people struggle — bring poles and use them. There is no technical ground, no rope and no glacier crossing, so the barrier is leg fitness and nothing else. If you can manage a long steep hill day at home and repeat it the next morning, you will enjoy this.

The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.

Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Questions people actually ask
How many days is the Rakaposhi Base Camp trek?
Seven door to door from Gilgit, of which four are walking. Some operators sell it as three. It can be done in three; it is a worse trip in three and a riskier one.
How fit do I need to be?
Fit enough for a long steep hill day and then another one the next morning. The climb out of Minapin is relentless and the descent is where most people find out about their knees. Poles help more here than on any other trek we run.
Is this a good first trek in Pakistan?
It is the one we suggest most often. Short, no technical ground, no glacier travel, a real Karakoram face at the end of it, and you are back in a hotel in under a week.
How high does it go?
The base-camp meadow is around 3,500 m, which we are still confirming against a second source and which prints with a marker until we have. It is low enough that altitude is rarely the problem on this trek. The legs are.
Do I need a permit?
No restricted-zone permit and no liaison officer — Nagar is an open trekking zone. There are local and park fees, which we pay as part of the trip. Your Pakistan visa is the paperwork that matters.
What does it cost and what moves the price?
Party size most of all, because camp, crew and a cook cost nearly the same for two people as for eight. After that, porter stages, which the route fixes rather than we do. Deposit is 25 per cent.
When is the best time to go?
May and June are green with full streams. September and October are clear and cold at night, and the face is at its best. July and August are warm and can be hazy.
Can I combine it with anything?
Easily. It sits in the same valley as Hunza, Attabad and the Karakoram Highway, and Rush Lake is across in Nagar. A fortnight takes this and a good deal more.
If this one is not quite right
The commonest reason a trip is wrong is that it is too hard or too easy, not that it is in the wrong place.
