Shimshal first ascent — unclimbed 6,000ers
Overview
A 30-day expedition to an unclimbed 6,000 m peak above the Shimshal Pamir, chosen with Shimshali climbers from a shortlist of objectives none of which has a recorded ascent. Maximum four climbers. You are not following a route — there is no route, and part of the trip is deciding whether the one you pick goes.
What a first ascent actually involves
No guidebook, no fixed lines from last season, no photographs of the upper mountain from the angle you need. We reconnoitre, we choose a line, and we may find on day twenty that it does not go and there is no time for the alternative. Roughly half of exploratory objectives at this standard are not summited at the first attempt, and that is a normal outcome rather than a failure.
If reaching a summit is what you want from a trip, book Spantik. If what you want is to stand under something nobody has climbed and work out how it might be done, this is the trip and there is very little else like it.
Why Shimshal
The Shimshal Pamir and the drainages around it hold an unusual density of unclimbed 6,000 m peaks, close enough to a settled valley to be reachable in a four-week trip. Shimshal also produces more serious high-altitude climbers per head than anywhere in Pakistan, and the objective shortlist comes from them. They know which faces hold ice, which approaches are passable in which weeks, and which peaks have been looked at and quietly rejected.
Who we take
Alpine experience at AD or above, competent and self-sufficient on mixed ground, and able to be part of a decision rather than a client on a rope. References required and genuinely checked. Four climbers maximum, because the margin on unknown ground is thin and a bigger party spends it.
Naming, and the record
If the peak is climbed, we record the ascent properly — route, altitude by GPS, date, party — and file it with the Alpine Club of Pakistan. Naming is not ours to do unilaterally: local names usually already exist, and where they do we use them. The Shimshali climbers on the team have the first word on this.
What is inside the price
Peak royalty and permits for the agreed objective, the trekking visa file, all transport on our own vehicles including the Shimshal road, the approach and base camp under our published porter charter, full camp with cook and mess for the whole period, climbing hardware and rope, Shimshali high-altitude climbers on the team, oxygen held for emergency use, satellite comms and daily forecasting, and a written evacuation plan that assumes no helicopter — because in this valley it should.

Private departures and group pricing
Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
This is not a first expedition. You should have climbed above 6,000 m before, be comfortable on moraine, snow and moderate ice, and be able to carry loads at altitude on consecutive days.
More importantly, you should be able to walk away from an objective. On ground nobody has climbed, the lead guide will call off an attempt on evidence you may not agree with, and that decision is final. If that is not a trip you want, the established routes in this catalogue are the better booking and we will say so.

Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Questions people actually ask
How can you sell a climb without knowing which peak?
Because that is how a first ascent actually works. We hold a permit for an area, go in, look at what is there, and commit to an objective the lead guide judges we can attempt safely. Anyone selling you a named unclimbed summit with a fixed itinerary is selling a story.
What are the chances of reaching a summit?
Lower than on an established route and we will not pretend otherwise. A first-ascent trip that comes home having looked at three objectives and attempted one has done what it set out to do.
What experience do I need?
Previous expedition experience and competence on unknown ground. We are not teaching you to climb out here and we will decline a booking where the record is not there.
Who owns the first ascent?
You do, with the crew who got you there, and we will credit the guides and the high-altitude staff by name in anything we publish. That is not negotiable from our side.
What if the objective turns out to be unsafe?
We walk away and look at another one. That is the expected course of this trip, not a failure of it, and it is why the itinerary has reconnaissance time rather than a fixed summit day.
Is it already climbed and nobody recorded it?
Possibly, and we will say so if we find evidence on the ground. The published records for this part of the Karakoram are incomplete and we would rather tell you that than sell you a certainty.
What communications are there?
Satellite phone with the group and a messenger with the lead guide, with a daily call to this office and a message home each evening.
Can I bring my own climbing partner?
Yes, and it is usually better. Private departures only on these trips, two to six climbers, because a first ascent is a judgement exercise and judgement does not scale.
If this one is not quite right
The commonest reason a trip is wrong is that it is too hard or too easy, not that it is in the wrong place.

- A step harder K2 expedition, south-east ridge
You have already chosen the region, which is the harder decision. These run from the same roadhead.
