Katpana cold desert
Overview
A two-day jeep safari to the Katpana cold desert on the edge of Skardu, with Kharpocho fort above the town and the Indus below it. Road-based, graded easy, and the only trip in this catalogue that genuinely improves in winter.
Twenty minutes from the town
Katpana sits just outside Skardu, which is its advantage over the larger dune field at Sarfaranga: you can be on the sand within half an hour of landing. Dunes at over 2,200 m with the Karakoram behind them, and the Indus running past.
Like every dune field it is worth seeing at the ends of the day and not worth much in the middle of one. We plan around that rather than against it.
Why it runs in winter
Most of Baltistan closes between November and March. Skardu does not — the airport runs when the weather allows and the town stays reachable. Katpana under snow, with the dunes half-covered and the peaks white to the valley floor, is the most striking it ever looks, and almost nobody sees it.
Winter here is cold and the flight is less reliable. Both are worth it, and we will tell you plainly if a departure should not run.
Kharpocho and the town
The fort above Skardu was built by the Maqpon rajas, and it opens the same history our Baltistan forts and mosques journey follows properly. and looks down on the confluence of the Indus and the Shigar. It is a short, steep walk up and the best orientation to the valley you will get.
What is inside the price
All permits, our own 4x4s and drivers, hotels, all meals, fort entry and a guide on our payroll. Medical kit and the written evacuation procedure, as on every trip we run. Everything else we run from Skardu starts within an hour of here, and our other jeep safaris work the same way.

Private departures and group pricing
Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.
| Party size | Price per person | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | USD 1,500 | A full crew for two people |
| 3 – 4 | USD 1,250 | |
| 5 – 8 | USD 1,050 | Second guide joins at six |
Deposit is 25% of the trip price. The payment schedule and the cancellation terms are published and sent with every quote, before you pay anything.
Day by day
Buffer days are built in, not padding. If the weather takes them, nothing downstream collapses and you are not charged twice.

- Tips
If our price is wrong for you we will move you to a lower tier or remove a named inclusion. We do not discount a published price, and we do not cut the crew.
Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
None required. The dunes are flat and the driving is short. The only effort on the trip is the walk up to Kharpocho fort, which is steep for about twenty minutes and entirely optional — the view is the reward and the vehicle waits either way.
In winter the cold is the real consideration rather than the exertion. Skardu in January is well below freezing and the dunes are exposed. If you are coming then, pack as though for a cold day on a hill, not for a drive.
Kit list
The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.
Group — we provide
- All vehicles, drivers and fuel
- Group first aid
- Satellite phone where there is no mobile signal
Personal — yours
- Layers for a wide temperature range; valley heat and pass cold on the same day
- Comfortable walking shoes for short walks off the road
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Power bank; mains power is intermittent outside the towns
- Personal medication and a declared medical history
Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.
Getting there
Islamabad
Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, local SIM and cash sorted.
Islamabad to Skardu
A short flight that is weather-dependent, or a long road that is not. In winter the flight is the only sensible option and it cancels often, so we build a buffer day and say so before you book.
On the ground
Our own 4x4s and our own drivers from Skardu onward.
Questions people actually ask
How is this different from Sarfaranga?
Katpana is smaller and far closer to Skardu; Sarfaranga is the bigger dune field and needs a drive into the Shigar valley. If you have one spare afternoon, come here. If you have three days, do Sarfaranga as well.
How many days do I need?
One full day covers it and two is comfortable. It is the trip we most often bolt onto the buffer day people spend waiting for the Skardu flight.
How fit do I need to be?
Not at all, with one exception: the walk up to Kharpocho fort is steep for about twenty minutes. Skip it and you lose nothing else on the trip.
Can this really run in winter?
Yes, and it is one of the very few things in Baltistan that can. Skardu stays reachable when the rest of the region closes. The flight is less reliable in winter and we build a buffer day for it.
What does it cost and what moves the price?
Party size, mostly, and your hotel. This is a short trip with a vehicle, a guide and a night or two in it, so the per-person figure falls quickly with each extra person in the car.
Do I need a permit?
No. Skardu is an open zone and your Pakistan visa is the only paperwork. We send a visa sponsor letter as part of the booking.
Is it suitable for a family?
It is one of the two trips we suggest most often for one. Short days, a town with real hotels, no altitude beyond Skardu itself. Tell us ages at enquiry and we will shape the days.
Can we camp on the dunes?
Yes, if you ask. We set up a proper camp with a cook rather than leaving you on the sand with a tent. It is worth doing on a clear night; Skardu has very little light spill.
If this one is not quite right
The commonest reason a trip is wrong is that it is too hard or too easy, not that it is in the wrong place.
- A step harder Deosai plateau and Sheosar Lake
You have already chosen the region, which is the harder decision. These run from the same roadhead.
