Sarfaranga and Katpana cold deserts

Moderate2 – 4 days2,500 mApril – OctoberSkardu & Baltistan · Jeep safari

Overview

A four-day jeep safari through the cold deserts of Skardu and Shigar — Katpana and Sarfaranga, sand dunes sitting at over 2,200 m against the Karakoram — with the Shigar Fort, Khaplu and the Shyok valley. Entirely road-based, suitable at any fitness, and the easiest trip in our catalogue.

Sand dunes at 2,200 metres

Katpana, just outside Skardu, and the much larger Sarfaranga in the Shigar valley are among the highest deserts anywhere. The combination is the point: dunes in the foreground, 7,000 m snow peaks behind them, the Indus running between. It is a landscape that does not photograph as though it is real.

We drive the dunes in the early morning and late afternoon when the light is low and the surface is firm, not in the middle of the day when there is nothing to see and the heat is unpleasant.

The Baltistan part of the trip

Shigar Fort — the Fong Khar, a 17th-century Raja’s residence restored over seven years and now a hotel — and the Khaplu Palace in Ghanche are the two great restored buildings of Baltistan, and both are reasons to slow down rather than photo stops. The Shyok valley beyond Khaplu runs toward the Siachen and is one of the least-visited drives in the region.

Who it suits

Anyone who can get in and out of a 4×4. No trekking, no altitude above about 2,500 m, no camping unless you want a dune night — which we will set up if you ask. It is the trip we recommend for older travellers, for families with young children, and for anyone whose time in Pakistan is short.

When it runs

April to October, the longest season we sell. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable; midsummer in the Skardu valley is hot in the afternoons, which is another reason the dune driving happens at either end of the day.

What is inside the price

All permits, 4x4s and drivers on our own plates, hotels throughout including the heritage properties where you want them, all meals, entry to the forts, and a guide on our payroll who can actually tell you what you are looking at in Shigar. Satellite comms in the Shyok, medical kit and a written evacuation plan as on every trip we run.

Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly

[WRITE THE HONEST FITNESS NOTE FOR THIS ROUTE BEFORE PUBLISHING.]

Kit list

The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.

Group — we provide

  • All vehicles, drivers and fuel
  • Group first aid
  • Satellite phone where there is no mobile signal

Personal — yours

  • Layers for a wide temperature range; valley heat and pass cold on the same day

Safety, evacuation and insurance

Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.

Carried on every departure

A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.

The rule that cannot be overruled

The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Getting there

Islamabad

Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, local SIM and cash sorted.

Islamabad to Skardu

A short flight that is weather-dependent, or a long road that is not. We build a buffer day either way and quote both.

On the ground

Our own 4x4s and our own drivers from Skardu onward.

Questions people actually ask

Is there really a desert that high?

Yes. Cold desert sits at over 2,200 m against snow peaks, which is the whole reason to come. It is not what most people picture when they think of Pakistan.

Is this suitable for a family?

It is the trip we most often suggest for one. Short days, comfortable nights, no altitude to speak of beyond Skardu itself. Tell us ages at enquiry and we will shape it.

Can this run in winter?

Yes, and it is one of the few things in Baltistan that can, which is why it is on the list. Skardu is cold but reachable and the dunes are at their most striking against snow.

Is there anything to walk?

Short walks on the dunes and around the forts. Nothing longer unless you ask for it, and we can add a day walk if you want one.

Can we drive on the dunes?

On the sections where it is permitted and sensible, with our own vehicles. We do not take guest vehicles onto sand.

How does this combine with other trips?

It sits naturally before or after anything starting in Skardu — Deosai, the Baltoro, Baltistan heritage. Most people add it to the buffer day they were going to spend waiting for a flight anyway.
