Hushe valley first ascent — unnamed 6,000 m objectives

Very hard22 – 26 days6,050 mJune – SeptemberHushe · Expedition

Overview

A 26-day exploratory expedition to an unclimbed peak in the side valleys above Hushe — Charakusa, Nangma, Kondus — the granite country of the Karakoram. Maximum four climbers. The objective is chosen on the ground from a shortlist, and the climbing here is rock rather than snow.

Granite, not glacier

This is the difference between this trip and the Shimshal one. The Charakusa and Nangma valleys hold hundreds of granite towers and spires, many under 6,000 m and a great number of them unclimbed, on walls that have been compared to Yosemite and the Bugaboos. The objectives are short, steep and technical rather than high and long.

That changes who the trip suits. You need rock competence — trad leading on alpine granite, often with a load, at altitude — more than you need a high-altitude record.

How the objective gets chosen

We walk in with a shortlist drawn up with Hushe climbers and we look at it. Aspect, approach, how much of the line is actually visible, what the ice at the base is doing, how long a retreat would take. Then the team picks. Sometimes the best objective is not the most striking one, and the honest version of this trip involves walking away from a beautiful tower because the descent is unjustifiable.

Who we take

Alpine rock experience at D or above, confident leading on granite, self-sufficient, with references. Four maximum. We ask for a climbing CV at enquiry and we read it properly — this is not a trip where enthusiasm substitutes for the skill.

What success looks like

A summit if the line goes. A thorough reconnaissance, photographs and a written assessment if it does not, which is how the next party gets up it. We publish what we find rather than sitting on it, and we record any ascent with the Alpine Club of Pakistan.

Why Hushe

The village sits at the mouth of all three valleys, which makes it the only base in the Karakoram where this density of unclimbed rock is a day’s walk rather than a week’s. Hushe’s climbers have been on the great Karakoram expeditions for three generations and they are on this team as climbers, not as porters.

What is inside the price

Peak royalty and permits for the agreed objective, the visa file, all transport on our own vehicles to Hushe, the approach and base camp under our published porter charter, full camp with cook and mess, rack and rope, Hushe climbers on the team, oxygen held for emergency use, satellite comms with daily forecasting, and a written evacuation plan for base camp and every bivouac we expect to use.

Private departures and group pricing

Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.

Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly

You should have climbed to 6,000 m before and be competent on snow and moderate ice with a rope. The approach is short, so the altitude arrives sooner than it does on a Baltoro expedition and the acclimatisation profile is built accordingly.

The ground is unknown. Expect to look at an objective, decide against it, and walk to another one. Roughly speaking, a first-ascent trip that returns without a summit has still done what it set out to do.

Safety, evacuation and insurance

Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.

Carried on every departure

A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.

The rule that cannot be overruled

The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Getting there

Islamabad

Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, local SIM and cash sorted.

Islamabad to Skardu

A short flight that is weather-dependent, or a long road that is not. We build a buffer day either way and quote both.

On the ground

Our own 4x4s and our own drivers from Skardu onward.

Questions people actually ask

How can you sell a climb without knowing which peak?

Because that is how a first ascent actually works. We hold a permit for an area, go in, look at what is there, and commit to an objective the lead guide judges we can attempt safely. Anyone selling you a named unclimbed summit with a fixed itinerary is selling a story.

What are the chances of reaching a summit?

Lower than on an established route and we will not pretend otherwise. A first-ascent trip that comes home having looked at three objectives and attempted one has done what it set out to do.

What experience do I need?

Previous expedition experience and competence on unknown ground. We are not teaching you to climb out here and we will decline a booking where the record is not there.

Who owns the first ascent?

You do, with the crew who got you there, and we will credit the guides and the high-altitude staff by name in anything we publish. That is not negotiable from our side.

What if the objective turns out to be unsafe?

We walk away and look at another one. That is the expected course of this trip, not a failure of it, and it is why the itinerary has reconnaissance time rather than a fixed summit day.

Is it already climbed and nobody recorded it?

Possibly, and we will say so if we find evidence on the ground. The published records for this part of the Karakoram are incomplete and we would rather tell you that than sell you a certainty.

What communications are there?

Satellite phone with the group and a messenger with the lead guide, with a daily call to this office and a message home each evening.

Can I bring my own climbing partner?

Yes, and it is usually better. Private departures only on these trips, two to six climbers, because a first ascent is a judgement exercise and judgement does not scale.
