Mingli Sar expedition
Overview
A twenty-two-day expedition to Mingli Sar above Shimshal, a snow peak climbed without sustained technical difficulty and one of the better first 6,000 m objectives in Pakistan. The approach is through Shimshal Pamir, which would be a trek worth doing on its own.
A real first peak
Mingli Sar is a snow climb. There is no rock, no fixed line of any length and no pitched climbing, but there is glacier, there is altitude, and there is a long summit day. For a trekker moving to mountaineering, that combination is the right one — enough to learn on, not enough to be out of your depth.
Shimshal
Shimshal is the last village on the road and the crew come from it. The community has produced a remarkable number of Pakistan’s high-altitude climbers, and the porters and high-altitude staff on this expedition are people who have climbed the mountain rather than people hired to carry to it.
Below the royalty band
At around 6,050 m the peak sits below 6,500 m, where no peak royalty is charged. That is why an expedition here costs a fraction of a seven-thousander and why it is the right place to start.
When it runs
June to August.
What is inside the price
Trekking permit, registration and local fees, transport on our own vehicles to Shimshal, base camp and high camp, cook and all meals, a Shimshal crew under our published porter charter, guides on our payroll with rope and group hardware, satellite comms, published turn-back criteria and an evacuation plan that assumes the helicopter may not come. The next step up is Shimshal Whitehorn. See the rest of Shimshal and our other Karakoram expeditions.

Your party, your dates. The per-person figure falls as the party grows, because the guides, the vehicles and the camp cost the same split more ways. Everything in the inclusions list applies, and the safety standard is the one published above.

- Tips
If our price is wrong for you we will move you to a lower tier or remove a named inclusion. We do not discount a published price, and we do not cut the crew.
Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly
Eight days of walking on the approach and the return, then a long summit day on snow at around 6,000 m. You need the fitness for consecutive six- to eight-hour days on rough ground before the climbing starts.
No previous summit is required and that is the point of this trip, but you do need to be a competent multi-day trekker who is comfortable with the idea of crampons and a rope. We teach the technique at base camp. If you have never slept above 4,000 m, say so at enquiry — we will look at your profile rather than hurry you, and on an expedition this size there is room to add a day.
Kit list
The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.
Group — we provide
- Base camp and high-camp tents, mess, kitchen and toilet
- Fixed rope, snow stakes and group climbing hardware
- Supplementary oxygen, masks and regulators where the plan calls for it
- Base camp medical kit, and a doctor where the team size requires one
- Satellite comms, weather forecasting and a daily message home
Personal — yours
- Double boots rated for the altitude band
- Down suit, and a separate insulated jacket for base camp
- Harness, ascender, descender, carabiners, ice axe and crampons
- Sleeping bag rated to −30 °C or better, plus a warmer base camp bag
- Glacier glasses and goggles, both with a spare
- Headtorch with spares, and a power bank
- Personal medication, and a full declared medical history
Safety, evacuation and insurance
Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.
A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.
The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.
Getting there
Islamabad
Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, SIM and cash sorted.
Islamabad to Gilgit
By air when the weather allows, which is the short way and the one that cancels. By road up the Karakoram Highway when it does not — long, reliable, and scenery rather than dead time.
On the ground
Our own vehicles and our own drivers from Gilgit onward.
Questions people actually ask
Can this be my first 6,000 m peak?
Yes, and that is what it is for. No rock, no long fixed line and no pitched climbing — but real glacier, real altitude and a long summit day, which is the right amount to learn on.
What experience do I need?
No previous summit. You do need to be a competent multi-day trekker comfortable with the idea of crampons and a rope, and we teach the technique at base camp.
How long is it, and when does it run?
Twenty-two days door to door, of which eight are walking and the rest is acclimatising, rotating and waiting. June to August.
How high is Mingli Sar?
Around 6,050 m. We have one source for that figure and have not matched it against a second, so it prints with a marker until we have.
Do I need a climbing permit and is there a royalty?
No peak royalty — at this altitude the peak sits below the 6,500 m band where royalty begins. Shimshal is close to the border, so a trekking permit, registration and a registered guide are required and they need lead time. We obtain all of it.
What does it cost and what moves the price?
No royalty is the single biggest reason this costs a fraction of a seven-thousander. What moves the rest is party size and the length of the Shimshal approach. Deposit is 25 per cent.
Who are the crew?
From Shimshal, under our published charter. The community has produced a remarkable number of Pakistan's high-altitude climbers, and the staff on this trip have climbed the mountain rather than been hired to carry to it.
How does the altitude get managed?
Three days walking up to the Pamir pastures before base camp, then an acclimatisation rotation with a night at high camp before the summit push. Pulse and oxygen saturation checked every evening from base camp upward.
If this one is not quite right
The commonest reason a trip is wrong is that it is too hard or too easy, not that it is in the wrong place.
