Shimshal Whitehorn expedition

Very hard22 – 26 days6,300 m [confirm]June – AugustShimshal · Expedition

Overview

A twenty-six-day expedition to Shimshal Whitehorn, the snow and ice peak standing above the Pamir pastures beyond Shimshal. It is a genuine step up from a first 6,000 m objective: steeper, more sustained, and with ground that asks for competence rather than willingness.

What makes it harder

Where Mingli Sar is a snow walk with altitude, Whitehorn has sustained steep snow and ice, fixed sections on the upper mountain, and a summit day that is long by any measure. You need to be able to front-point, place and clip protection, and keep making good decisions when tired.

The Pamir approach

The walk in is through the Shimshal Pamir, the high summer pastures worked by families from the village and reached in three days from the road. It is the acclimatisation and it is also one of the best treks in Pakistan, which makes the approach something other than a cost.

What we ask of you

A verified 6,000 m summit, or a very strong alpine record with sustained snow and ice on it. We check it rather than take your word for it.

When it runs

June to August.

What is inside the price

Climbing permit, trekking permit, registration and local fees, transport on our own vehicles to Shimshal, base camp and high camps, cook and all meals, a Shimshal crew under our published porter charter, guides on our payroll with fixed rope and group hardware, satellite comms and weather forecasting, guides at the ratios we publish, and an evacuation plan that assumes the helicopter may not come. Fitness and difficulty — read this honestly

A verified 6,000 m summit, or a very strong alpine record with sustained snow and ice on it. We check it. This is not the mountain to learn crampon technique on.

You need to be able to front-point for long periods, place and clip protection on fixed sections, and keep making good decisions late in a very long summit day. The approach through the Pamir is eight days of walking across the trip and serves as acclimatisation; the climbing above base camp is where the requirement sits. If you are coming off a first 6,000 m peak and are not sure you are ready, tell us and we will say so plainly rather than take the booking.

Kit list

The full list with quantities is sent with your quote. Rental is available in Skardu for most of it, priced separately. Your kit is checked item by item in Islamabad, not the night before the trek.

Group — we provide

  • Base camp and high-camp tents, mess, kitchen and toilet
  • Fixed rope, snow stakes and group climbing hardware
  • Supplementary oxygen, masks and regulators where the plan calls for it
  • Base camp medical kit, and a doctor where the team size requires one
  • Satellite comms, weather forecasting and a daily message home

Personal — yours

  • Double boots rated for the altitude band
  • Down suit, and a separate insulated jacket for base camp
  • Harness, ascender, descender, carabiners, ice axe and crampons
  • Sleeping bag rated to −30 °C or better, plus a warmer base camp bag
  • Glacier glasses and goggles, both with a spare
  • Headtorch with spares, and a power bank
  • Personal medication, and a full declared medical history

Safety, evacuation and insurance

Helicopter rescue in the Karakoram is not guaranteed. Weather, altitude, daylight and clearance all decide whether a helicopter flies, so every stage carries a named drive-out or walk-out plan. Your insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and repatriation to the maximum altitude on your itinerary, and we verify the certificate before the trip starts.

Carried on every departure

A graded medical kit sized to the trip, oxygen, a portable altitude chamber, a satellite phone and a messenger, and a wilderness first responder in the crew.

The rule that cannot be overruled

The lead guide’s decision to turn back is final. Not a guest, not an agent, not this office — whatever has been paid.

Getting there

Islamabad

Met inside the terminal by a member of our team, not a driver with a sign outside it. Briefing the same evening, SIM and cash sorted.

Islamabad to Gilgit

By air when the weather allows, which is the short way and the one that cancels. By road up the Karakoram Highway when it does not — long, reliable, and scenery rather than dead time.

On the ground

Our own vehicles and our own drivers from Gilgit onward.

Questions people actually ask

How is this different from Mingli Sar?

Mingli Sar is a snow walk with altitude and no technical ground. Whitehorn has sustained steep snow and ice, fixed sections on the upper mountain and a much longer summit day. It is a step up and we are honest that it is.

What experience do you require?

A verified 6,000 m summit, or a very strong alpine record with sustained snow and ice on it. We check it rather than take your word for it. This is not the mountain to learn crampon technique on.

How long is it, and when does it run?

Twenty-six days door to door, of which eight are walking on the approach and return. June to August.

How high is it?

Around 6,300 m. We have not found a second source we trust for that figure, so it prints with a marker until we have one.

Do I need a climbing permit and is there a royalty?

No peak royalty — it sits below the 6,500 m band. A climbing permit, trekking permit and registration are required, and Shimshal's proximity to the border means the paperwork needs real lead time. We obtain all of it and it is in the price.

What does it cost and what moves the price?

No royalty is why this costs far less than a seven-thousander of comparable difficulty. Party size moves the rest, and the party is capped at six because of the guide ratio above base camp. Deposit is 25 per cent.

How does the acclimatisation work?

Three days walking up to the Pamir pastures before base camp, then rotations through the high camps before any summit attempt. Pulse and oxygen saturation checked every evening from base camp upward.

Who decides when to go up?

The lead guide, on the forecast and on what the mountain is doing. That decision is final and cannot be overruled by a climber or by this office.
